According to European standard EN 10240, the surface of hot – dip galvanized products should be reasonably smooth and have no major discontinuities. Minor roughness or small zinc nodules are acceptable as long as they do not affect the functionality of the pipe.

Dimensional Accuracy

Galvanized steel pipes are also subject to strict dimensional standards. The outer diameter, wall thickness, and length of the pipes must be within specified tolerances. For instance, in the case of the outer diameter, ASTM A53 (a common standard for welded and seamless steel pipes) specifies diameter tolerances based on the nominal size of the pipe.

For pipe wall thickness, the tolerance is usually related to the intended application. Pipes used in high – pressure applications may have stricter wall – thickness tolerances to ensure their structural integrity. If the dimensions deviate too much from the standard, it can lead to installation problems, reduced flow capacity, or even structural failures under certain conditions.

Chemical Composition

The base steel used in galvanized steel pipes has its own chemical composition requirements. Steel is an alloy mainly composed of iron and carbon, with other elements such as manganese, silicon, sulfur, and phosphorus in smaller amounts.

The carbon content affects the strength and hardness of the steel. Generally, a higher carbon content results in stronger but less ductile steel. Sulfur and phosphorus are considered impurities in steel. High sulfur content can cause hot – shortness, where the steel becomes brittle when hot, while high phosphorus content can lead to cold – shortness, making the steel brittle at low temperatures.

Standards like ASTM A53 specify the maximum allowable amounts of these elements. For example, the maximum sulfur content is usually limited to 0.05% and the maximum phosphorus content to 0.045%.

Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of galvanized steel pipes are also an important aspect of the standards. Tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation are key parameters.

Tensile strength is the maximum stress a material can withstand while being stretched before it breaks. Yield strength is the stress at which a material begins to deform plastically. Elongation measures the ability of the material to stretch before fracturing.

ASTM A53 sets different tensile and yield strength requirements for different grades of steel pipes. For example, Grade A pipes generally have a minimum yield strength of 240 MPa (35,000 psi) and a minimum tensile strength of 380 MPa (55,000 psi). These mechanical properties ensure that the pipes can withstand the stresses they encounter during installation and use.

Testing and Certification

To ensure that galvanized steel pipes meet the relevant standards, various testing methods are employed. Coating thickness can be measured using magnetic or eddy – current thickness gauges. Chemical composition analysis can be done through spectroscopy techniques, such as optical emission spectroscopy.

Mechanical property testing involves tensile tests, where a sample of the pipe is pulled until it breaks to determine its strength and elongation. Bend tests are also commonly carried out to check the ductility of the pipe and the adhesion of the zinc coating.
